Backend Technical Leader – Payment Platforms

Job Description

As the Backend Technical Leader, you will oversee the backend development lifecycle for payment systems, ensuring high-quality delivery, scalability, and performance. Beyond your technical contributions, you will act as the main bridge between the development team, product owners, and business stakeholders—ensuring clarity in requirements, managing risks, and driving continuous improvement.

You will guide the team in designing and developing microservices in Java, implementing REST architectures, optimising settlement flows, and ensuring the reliability of payment operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and mentor a self-organised Agile development team

  • Manage communication with stakeholders, ensuring expectations are aligned

  • Identify project requirements, define scope, and estimate effort

  • Monitor team performance, support evaluations, and drive improvement

  • Identify risks early and implement mitigation strategies

  • Track KPIs using tools such as JIRA

Technical Responsibilities

  • Oversee the design and development of backend systems for digital payments

  • Ensure high-quality implementation of settlement, disbursement, chargeback, and reconciliation flows

  • Architect and guide microservices development based on REST

  • Work with payment gateway and PSP models (Aggregator & Processor)

  • Collaborate on systems involving digital payments, payment gateways, or transaction processing

  • Ensure cloud-ready architectures with AWS (Cloud Practitioner knowledge valued)

  • Apply best practices using:

    • Java (Spring Core, MVC, Security, JPA/Hibernate)

    • Log4j / SLF4J

    • Microservices

    • CI/CD basics (Jenkins)

  • Oversee the development of multi-layer enterprise backend applications

  • Guarantee the quality of the integration and performance of backend services

Required Experience & Skills

 3+ years of experience in digital payments or payment platforms

 Strong knowledge of:

  • Settlement & disbursement processes

  • Chargebacks, credits, debits, frozen balances, available balance, etc.

  • Acquirer flow

  • Gateway model (Processor)

  • PSP & PSP Aggregator model

  •  2+ years leading development teams or technical projects

  •  Experience with cloud-native architectures and microservices

  •  Strong Java and Spring framework expertise

  •  Solid understanding of REST API principles

  •  Familiarity with AWS services

  •  Experience with Jenkins or similar CI/CD tools

  •  Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
